Education, Formation (Bildung), and Politics in multidisciplinary Conversations

Conference Venue: University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus, Tietoteknia-building (Savilahdentie 6), TTA (auditorium) + seminar halls close to the auditorium.

The theme of the 2018 Annual Meeting is the multidisciplinary nature of education, formation (Bildung), and politics. The 14th Annual Meeting of The Finnish Network of the History and Philosophy of Education will take place in Kuopio, Finland, at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus.

The Finnish Network of the History and Philosophy of Education invites the submission of papers for its 14th Annual Meeting. The invitation is addressed to researchers of any seniority (students to senior researchers), as well as individuals working in applied fields. Submissions that of a historical or philosophical bearing on the discussion on multidisciplinary nature of educational research are particularly encouraged.

Abstracts (max.  1200 characters = 1/2 page) can be submitted either in English or in Finnish.

Papers will be presented in parallel sessions held in English and in Finnish.

There is no conference fee. Lunches, dinners, coffee are self-funded.

The 14th Annual Meeting of The Finnish Network of the History and Philosophy of Education is organized in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland, Snellman Institute, Finnish Network of the History and Philosophy of Education and Finnish Social Pedagogy Society.

Should I submit? - You don’t have to be a philosopher or historian to attend, rather researchers of all disciplines are invited. Anyone interested in the conference theme is warmly welcome to discuss and submit an abstract regarding the historical and philosophical inquiries of their own research. Papers that are not directly connected to the conference theme can also be submitted. Come meet new and old acquaintances cross disciplinary divides!

Keynote speakers

Juha Hämäläinen (S.Sc.D. Lic.A.Ed) earned his PhD in the field of Social Policy with his research that examines social-ethical grounds and history of child welfare. Since 1998 he has been a professor of social work, particularly professor of social pedagogy in the University of Kuopio, later known as the University of Eastern Finland. Visiting scholar at the University of Bamberg 1993-1994, Visiting Professor at Eichstätt University 1995-1996, Tartu University 1996-2001 and Ostrava University since 2008. Academic positions of trust both, national and international. Executive manager of the Child Protection Research Center, founded in 2017 at Fudan University.

Eero Ojanen, DPhil., studied philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä, defended 2016 at the University of Eastern Finland in the field of social pedagogy with the study of local material from Saima magazine by J.V.Snellman. Since the 1980s he has been a freelance journalist, translator, teacher and writer. Since 2004, he has also been a member of the Helsinki University of Business and Economics (part-time). Member of the Scientific Committee of the Snellman Institute in Kuopio.


Preconference (in Finnish)

June 6, 2018 at 15-18 Annual Meeting will feature a pre-conference workshop on the methodology in History and Philosophy of Education. The workshop is open to researchers of any seniority (students to senior researchers), as well as individuals working in applied fields. At this time, it is also possible to arrange other network or smaller research groups meetings, for example.
